Ottoman
Empire 1500 AD - 1900 AD
The Mosque of
Mohammud Ali was begun in
1820 by one of the local rulers of the Ottoman empire
that ruled from Turkey. It is built on The Citidel, a
fortified bluff, first used by Muslim invaders from
Tunisia. Egypt was so attractive to invaders because it
had the most organized agricultural system in the area,
and it was a trade center with all of Africa.
Before the Ottoman Empire, Egypt was ruled by Muslims who
swept out of Arabia.
