Abydos Triad - Osiris, Isis and Horus
Osiris - The god of the underworld. Osiris was the husband
of Isis and the brother of Set. His betrayal and murder by Set and Isis's search
for his body is a beautiful series of Legends.
Osiris and Isis had a son, Horus. After his death, Osiris, progresses to the
underworld to preside as ruler there.
Isis - The mother of Horus. As the mother of Horus, Isis
was considered to be mother of the King. In the Late and Graeco-Roman period
she is often portrayed suckling the infant horus. The hieraglyph for her name
is a throne. She is ofen depicted with a throne on her head or a solar disc
with cow's horns. She is sometimes dipicted with large sheltering wings. Her
main cult was at Philae.
She was closely associated with magic. She could heal and assume any form she
chose, which came in handy when she was searching for the body of Osirus. Two
other important aspects were "Great White Sow of Heliopolis" and the Isis-cow
which gave birth to the sacred Apis Bull of Memphis.
Horus - The child of Isis and Osirus. Horus was killed by
Seth, as was his father, Osirus. However, in legend, Horus joined his father
in the underworld and returned to fight and defeat Set at Edfu. He fought in
his corporal form that was resurected from the Duat and in the form of a winged
sun disc.
