
Anubis was the son of Nephthys and Seth. He is the jackel headed god associated
with embalming. He is an ancient god who was worshiped all over Egypt. At Saqqara
there was a place known as Anubeion where mummified dogs and jackals were ritually
buried.
Anubis had an ancient cult center at Abydos which became a centre of the cult
of Osiris. In th Old Kingdom prayers were addressed to to Anubis for the survival
of the deceased in the afterlife. He was surplanted by Osiris in the underworld
mythology, but remained to be part of the judgement in the weighing of the heart.
The following epithets speak of Anubis: "Foremost of the westerners" (the
West where the dead were buried); "He who is upon his mountain" (the desert
cliffs overlooking the cemetaries); "Lord of Sacred Lands" (the desert where
the dead were buried); "The one presiding over the god's pavillion (The place
where the embalming was done, or the burial chamber); "He who is in the place
of embalming".
