What is The Global Egyptian Museum?

The Global Egyptian Museum is a collection of pictures and details of the published and unpublished items in 10 European Museums. It is growing to include all the museums in Europe.

It is the latest effort of CCER which is dedicated to creating computerized research tools on Egypt.

You can view it in  one of seven languages: English, Nederlands, Deutsch, Francais, Italiano, Espangnol or Portugese.

Try it for 24 hours

The Global Egyptian Museum is a subscription service, but you can sign in for a 24-hour pass to take a quick look. Click here for a quick overview of How to Use the Global Egyptian Museum Search and Menus, so that you can get the most out of your 24 hours and decide whether you want to subscribe.

Subscribe

The subscription price for individuals is 50 Euro's, about the same as subscribing yearly to a magazine, and includes a multi-media CD.

 Review and Preview

I spent several hours surfing around on a "Press" pass to write this review and put together the "How to Guide"

It is a beautiful site and the depth and variety of information was astounding. I think it is well worth a subscription fee.

I think any school or university will find this a wonderful tool for students and faculty. Individuals who are interested in Egypt are going to get hours of enjoyment looking at the collections and following specific searches on their favorite pharaohs and sites.

I found it easy to get around once I got an overview of the logic, however, I did not intuitively "get" the search facility, and suggest that you read the How to Search for Objects  guide on this site before you sign on. You might "get" it instantly, but why get frustrated?

The areas to explore are:

Objects | Guides | Themes | Views | Glossary | Information | Kids

You can go directly to an illustrated preview of each section by clicking the links.  I have included a brief summary of the sections below.

Objects
The Objects Menu  gives you access to the whole database through the general search facility. Your search will yield a number of thumbnail pictures of the objects. Click on one and get more information. The How to Search for Objects shows you how and what you can see in this section.

Guides
Guides lets you choose  an audio tour of each participating museum. Click on the museum and see a selection of items. An audio description is included for each item.

Themes
The Themes Menu presents a choice of themes of Egyptian life such as Jewelery, Arts and Crafts, Scripts, and Kingship. Click on the theme and then read the introduction and follow other links in the "theme".

Views
The Views  section was the most surpising to me. It contains panoramic "movies" of the display rooms in the museums, plus several items in each museum which can be examined in small or enlarged size as they rotate to reveal all sides.

Glossary
This Glossary includes a full description of the item and a related picture. Special items have a "eye" beside them. When you click on those items you get a panoramic movie. You can control the movement speed and direction of the movie.

Information
This includes information about the site.

Kids
The Kids section is set up for click and explore adventures. There are maps, articles and even a quiz with a diploma.

There is also a teacher's manual that will be useful to teachers in the classroom.
