How to Search the The Global Egyptian Museum

The search facility of the Global Egyptian Museum is extensive.  You can choose a broad search or a narrow one.  This page will show you how to use most of the search functions.  If you have more questions, once you are using the site, there is a contact email for specific help.  I emailed for help and got a prompt and helpful reply.

When you login to the site, you will see this page.  It is the general Objects search page.

You must indicate how you wish to narrow your search on this page and then click on Search.

Refine your search and then Click Search.

Narrow your search by category:

There are menu choices under each picture.  You narrow the search by the progressive choice of menu items in each category: Museum, Objects, Material, Period and Site.

If you do not choose to narrow the search, and click on Search, you will see the first page of all 6000 items currently in the database.

I have given the menu items available for the first two categories under the illustration below. The Database is growing and more museums will be added.  There are currently three on the menu without items which are in progress of being added.

Below, I have illustrated a search with only one category chosen ( Museum | Amsterdam).  You can see the depth of information that is available on any one object.

There is also an illustration of the type of interface that you get if you choose Objects | Advanced from the Objects menu. I have shown what would result if I narrowed a search by Museum and Objects.

The database provides all the details any Egyptologist would want and certainly enough for any armchair archaeologist.

Search by keyword:

Just type in your keyword and click on Search.  I did one on Hatshepsut.  A number of items appeared and each had the same detail and depth available as shown below in the sample search of the Amsterdam Museum.

Sample Search: Narrow by  One Category

All Items in One Museum :  Amsterdam
This illustrates the simplest search...  Choosing just one museum, all objects, in all categories.

Use the menu to choose Amsterdam which has 100 items.

Click on Search.

You will see the following screen.

Narrow the search to all objects in Amsterdam Museum and click on Search.
Here are the first 18 objects of the 100 objects in the database from the Amsterdam Museum.

Click on an object.  I chose the statue.

The following information about that statue was brought up.

Page one of all the objects in the Amsterdam Museum.
Each item is shown in a number of aspects (1|2|3)  and has several types of information.

This is Aspect 1 (frontal view) and a general Description of the Ptah-Sokar-Osiris Statue.

The symbols in the bottom left corner let you move around in the search selection.

Description of Statue chosen.
Aspect 2 of the object is a rear view.  I have chosen that aspect when I chose the Information menu item. General Information about the object such as composition, site of origin and dating.
The Hieroglyphs menu item shows any inscriptions on the object.  You can choose a Transliteration, a Translation or the Names included in the inscription from the menu at the top of the page.

Also note that you can enlarge the hieroglyphs using the Zoom facility at the top.

Hieroglyphs on the object, complete with translation.
The Bibliography lists any published comment on the item.  I chose Aspect 3 for display on this page. Bibliography for an object.
The Advanced menu item is a presentation of all the information in the database.  This is available in several views.  The view shown is the Basic Info.

Dating, Textual Data, Actors and Reference information are available from the menu at the top.

This Advanced option is different from the Search Objects menu choice "Advanced".  The result of using Objects | Advanced as a choice to narrow the search is shown below.

Advanced information on an object (not the Advanced option choice for a search).

Narrowing your search with two categories

Museums | Amsterdam and
Objects | Advanced

When you are narrowing your search, you can choose "Advanced" from the Objects menu.  You will immediately be given a hierarchy list.

You click on the + to get each item to expand to show more refined choices.

I clicked on Architecture and then Architectural Element  and got the next screen.

Choose Advanced from Objects menu and expand Architecture and Architecture Elements.
On this screen you can see all the types of architectural elements.  Some sub-categories have further sub-categories (see the +'s).

I clicked on Stela so that I could see all the Stela in the collection of the Amsterdam Museum.

I was then returned to the Objects | Search screen.

Choose Stela fromt he list of Architectual Elements.
This is what I saw.

It shows my choice of the Amsterdam Museum with an Advanced specification for Objects (stela) and All Materials, All Periods and All Sites.

I then clicked on Search, and the following collection of objects was shown.

Search narrowed to Amsterdam Museum and Advanced Specification of Objects (stela).
Here are all the Egyptian Stela in the Amsterdam  Museum.

Each object has the same depth of information as shown above in the search for all items in the Amsterdam Museum.

All the Stela in the Amsterdam Museum.
