Excerpt from Candidate Julian
Bobbie pushed her hair back and watched the big Cadillac glide down the street. Aged, but polished to a shine that glinted like bright water. When the blue car turned the corner, Bobbie could barely stop herself from running to the corner. Someone’s got company! It can’t be Nick and Jane since they always go to his mother’s place, she wondered. The Johnson place? Maybe. Or that girl who works at the bank. Oh, what is her name? It’ll come to me in a minute. Humming happily, Bobbie returned to deadheading her rosebushes. She buried her nose in the heart of a deep yellow end-of-the-season bloom. The yellow petals dripped around her. When Bobbie knelt to pick them up and put in her basket of cuttings, Whiskers jumped up from under the shade tree to run over to her. Whisker’s purr was loud and her sweet face gazed up at Bobbie. "Time for lunch, huh? Okay, let me just get these in water." Going into the kitchen with white cat just behind her, Bobbie picked out the loose petals and dropped them in to a large gallon glass jug. The stemmed roses she gathered, measuring with her eye and trimmed carefully. Getting a huge pink vase she stuffed them in any old way. She looked at Whiskers and told her, "So much freer don’t you think? Than "artfully" arranged? I knew you agreed." Bobbie made herself a tuna sandwich and went back out on the porch. When only a bite of tuna and crust was left for Whiskers, Bobbie handed it to the cat. "Want to go for a walk?" Bobbie stood up and glanced at her roses. Oh, well, she really did need to check the neighborhood. She was one the Watchers and besides who had come in that blue Caddy? Candidate Julian is soon to be published.
